Gurnard Lionfish

If you remember way back when, I told a story about finding a frogfish on a dive, and I mentioned that just prior to spotting the frogfish, we were paying attention to a lionfish… that is that lionfish.

It is a Gurnard Lionfish (Parapterois hetururus) and I figure it gets its name from its large colorful pectoral fins that it sometimes holds open to its side – similar to what a Helmet Gurnard would do (sorry – I don’t have any photos of them).

I am not sure if the whitish stuff is some sort of algae or what, but it does give the the photos a sort of dreamy look to them…
