Petroglyphs are rock carvings made by removing a top layer of rock to reveal a different colored rock color below. Capitol Reef has a number of petroglyphs left here by earlier inhabitants of the area (and then subsequently vandalized by more recent inhabitants). I’m not a conspiracy theorist, so I’m not one to think that these carvings that look like aliens were made by the original peoples. Sometimes it does make me chuckle a little to see how cleverly some folks integrated their additions. I mean, it makes me a little sad that doing so ruins the original artwork… but what makes me the most sad are the bullet holes.
