Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

I had originally planned on stopping at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge on my drive down. There is a wildlife drive there that I thought would be worth checking out, but apparently they are doing maintenance on most of the trails. I was able to stop at one trail that was about a mile long – which honestly with how bad the mosquitoes were, was more than enough… every time I stopped to take a photo, I was swarmed by at least 10 mozzies instantly.

When I mentioned stopping at a park near Savannah, a friend said, “Watch out for the snakes!” and I assumed that they were joking. No more than 20 feet into the trail from the parking area, I startled two Black Racer snakes. One took off too far away to photograph, but I managed to get a couple shots of the other. Conditions were pretty low light, so I only got one keeper…

The trail was rather nice… except for the mozzies…

And then at the end of the trail, I came across another snake that was laying across the entire trail…

We will be in the Savannah area for a week in March 2023. We will have to check this spot out.
