Rattlesnake Canyon (part 1)

On the suggestion from my friend Dawn (who was super helpful with suggestions during my time in Colorado), Rich and I backpacked into Rattlesnake Canyon for one night.

Actually, I guess I should back up the story a little bit right there… We originally were planning on two nights in Rattlesnake Canyon but in an unexpected situation, the desert was rainy and Dawn told us that it would be a red, sticky, slick, muddy mess during and right after the rain. Since neither Rich nor I wanted to deal with that kind of mess, we rearranged our days a little and ended up only doing one night in the canyon. Who would have thought that our backpacking plans in the desert would be disrupted by rain?

Anyway, there is more to the story, but for now I’m just going to share a couple views of the start of the hike, a couple lizards, and some cactus photos. Enjoy.

Even when we got started on the hike, the clouds looked a little like the possibility of rain…

But they quickly cleared out and was replaced by bright blue skies and a blazingly hot sun!

For some reason I had a fascination with the cactus spines on this hike…

And I managed to get a couple lizards to sit still long enough for me to snap a few photos… including one Collared Lizard.

Love the desert and all of it’s surprises – but of course lizards always do 🙂
